This campaign relaunched Brylcreem after years of decline. Our brief was to attract young people without alienating the small number of older users who were still loyal to the brand.
All the ads in the campaign were made entirely out of existing footage (old Brylcreem ads). It was a first and very difficult to do before digital – individual frames were cut together by hand over a hot summer. This one had original footage from five earlier commercials.
It was part of the pencil-winning D&AD ‘Best TV campaign’, 1986 and has also been credited with being the first ‘retro’ ad campaign.
